Christian Sampson: Inspiration

Christian Sampson is a photographer from Peru, India who started taking photos around the theme of mental illness in 2014. He got his friends to model for him and researched the most common mental disorders. He decided on 12 total topics: Panic, Tourette’s, OCD, Paranoia, Anxiety, Bipolar, Addiction, Depression, Schizophrenia, Anorexia, Autism, and Insomnia.

“Just because it can’t be seen, it doesn’t mean damage can’t be done. That’s why the series is so dark, because I want to make the point that people suffer from this” – Christian Sampson

This artist appeals to me because he wants to emphasize the suffering that comes along with mental illnesses and disorders, which is something people don’t usually talk about openly. His depictions are also accurate, which really gets a clear and right message forward. He really utilizes the quotation “A picture speaks a thousand words”

Aspects I’d like to incorporate in my own work is the hard truth of it all, the darker side, and the hard truth.
